Waibaidu Bridge Overview

A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's first steel bridge and iconic landmark.

Waibaidu Bridge, also known as Garden Bridge, is Shanghai's first steel bridge and one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Built in 1907, this historic truss bridge spans Suzhou Creek, connecting the Bund with Hongkou District.

The bridge's name means "outer ferry crossing," referring to its location outside the old city walls. It replaced an earlier wooden bridge and became a symbol of Shanghai's modernization during the early 20th century. Beautifully illuminated at night, it offers excellent views of both the Bund and the city skyline.
